The Response

In response to the looming threat of chytrid fungus, scientists and conservationists agreed to an Amphibian Conservation Action Plan which includes research, assessment, long-term conservation programs, and a short-term emergency response plan for immediate amphibian crises. Amphibian Ark is the emergency response portion of the plan — a program that rescues priority endangered species that cannot be saved in the wild and places them into protective custody in dedicated biosecure facilities at zoos, aquariums and other institutions around the world for safekeeping and breeding. Protected species will be released back into the wild when the threats have been controlled. For more on the amphibian action plan, visit
